Makarska is the base for the riviera, and the riviera is really one long beach: sixty kilometres of towns strung along the D8, Brela and Baska Voda to the north, Tucepi and Podgora to the south. Without a car you pick one resort and stay put; with one, every pebble cove and konoba on the strip is a ten-minute hop. Most of our travellers collect the car right here in town, though Split car hire an hour north is the move if you land at Split Airport and want wheels from the moment you clear arrivals.
The mountain behind the beach is the trip most people skip, wrongly. Biokovo Nature Park climbs from the gate just east of town to the Skywalk at 1,228 metres on a single-track road with passing bays every few hundred metres. It is steep, it is narrow, and the park meters cars in at the gate, so go early in the day before the convoys form and take the smallest car your luggage allows. If a chunky deposit hold is what makes you nervous before a road like that, several suppliers here offer no-deposit car rental in Croatia at its simplest; filter for it and drive up relaxed.
The town also earns its keep as a halfway house. The ferry to Sumartin on Brac sails straight out of the harbour, so you can put the car on a boat and be driving island roads by lunch, and Makarska splits the coast run neatly: Split is just over an hour back north, or you continue south to Dubrovnik in a little over two. One warning we give everyone in July and August: the D8 is the only road through the riviera and it crawls at midday, so do your driving early or late and swim in between.
Before you book
If you plan to stay on one beach, no. But the riviera is a 60 km string of towns on the D8, and the buses between them are slow and packed in summer. A car turns one resort into all of them: breakfast in Brela, an afternoon cove past Podgora, dinner in a hill village above Tucepi.
Yes, suppliers here do not restrict the park road. It is single track with passing bays and the park limits how many cars enter at a time, so queues build behind the gate from mid-morning. Go early, use a small car, and take it slowly; the road is the attraction as much as the Skywalk.
Yes. The Jadrolinija car ferry from Makarska harbour to Sumartin takes rental cars and the crossing is about an hour. In July and August buy the vehicle ticket in advance and be at the port early; car deck space goes first.
Mostar is about 1 h 40 away including the Bosnian border. Cross-border terms differ by supplier, so check the listing before you book; each one states whether Bosnia is allowed and on what conditions. Carry your passport and leave buffer time for the border queue in peak season.
Both work. If you land at Split Airport, collecting there means you have the car from arrivals and drive the hour south yourself. If you would rather not drive on arrival day, suppliers here deliver to your hotel or the harbour in Makarska; since the town sits about an hour from the airport this is treated as an out-of-town delivery, so the terms and any fee are shown on each listing before you book.
Yes, many suppliers allow a one-way rental. Leaving the car in Split (just over an hour north) or Dubrovnik (a little over two hours south) carries a fixed per-route fee that is shown up front before you pay, never added afterwards. Choose your drop-off city when you book so only the cars that allow it appear.
