Here is the thing nobody mentions when they book for Dalmatia: Split Airport is not really Split's airport, it is Trogir's. The runway sits six kilometres up the road, which puts cars at Split Airport, ten minutes away from the old town bridge, while Split itself is a 35-minute drive the other way. Land, collect the keys at arrivals, and you can be unpacking on Ciovo before the Split-bound queue has cleared the taxi rank.
Trogir's medieval core is a tiny island, barely 500 metres across, and it is car-free; every rental lives on the mainland side or over on Ciovo. In practice that is no hardship. Suppliers hand over by the bridge or bring the car to your door, and because the fleet is shared with the main Split hub, a small base does not mean a small choice of cars.
One honest warning for Ciovo stays: even with the 2018 bypass bridge carrying the through traffic, the old town bridge still backs up when the beaches fill and empty in July and August. Cross early or cross late and it is a non-event. Beyond that, day trips fan out nicely; Primosten and Krka are both under an hour, and the coast road runs north along the coast to Sibenik if you fancy a second walled town without changing hotels.
Before you book
Geography. Split Airport is about ten minutes from Trogir and thirty-five from Split, so if you are staying in Trogir or on Ciovo, an airport or Trogir handover skips Split's traffic entirely. The cars come from the same regional fleet, so you give up nothing on choice.
Far better than it used to be; the bypass bridge opened in 2018 and took the through traffic away from town. The old bridge by the centre still queues in July and August when the beach crowd moves, roughly mid-morning and early evening. Cross outside those windows or ask for Ciovo-side delivery and you will barely notice it.
On the mainland side, normally at a parking area near the bridge and bus station a few minutes' walk from the gate, or delivered to your accommodation on Ciovo. Nothing drives into the old town itself; it is pedestrian and there is no parking inside.
Very. Krka's waterfalls, Primosten and Split are all within about 45 minutes, the A1 motorway entrance is 15 minutes inland for fast runs to Zadar or Plitvice, and you return each evening to a town you can walk end to end in ten minutes.
On the mainland side, not in the old town. The island core is pedestrian with no parking inside, so cars use the parking areas by the bridge and bus station, a short walk from the gate. If you are staying on Ciovo, most apartments come with their own space, so you can leave the car there and walk across the bridge into the centre.
Yes. One-way rentals are common along the coast, and any drop fee for the route is fixed and shown up front before you book, with no separate booking charge. Just note the return city when you reserve so the car and paperwork are arranged for the right end of the trip.
