Sibenik is the only city on this coast with two national parks on its doorstep, and that is exactly why you want a car here. Krka's Skradin entrance is a fifteen to twenty minute drive from the old town, close enough to be on the boardwalks before the tour buses arrive; in July and August we would be at the gate by ten at the latest. The city also sits on the coast road between Split and Zadar, forty-five minutes north, so you can fly into either end of Dalmatia; a name-board meet at Zadar Airport has you on the coast road inside an hour, swimming the same afternoon.
One thing to know before you arrive: the old town is a maze of steep stone stairways, wonderful on foot and useless by car. Park low, on the waterfront side by the harbour, and walk up. The beach towns are the easy part. Vodice is fifteen minutes away, Primosten about twenty-five, and the D8 carries on south past the bays to Trogir and the Ciovo bridge in roughly forty-five minutes.
The Kornati islands are the other park, and they are a boat day rather than a driving day. The excursion boats leave from Vodice and Murter in the morning, and the car is what gets you to the marina in time for check-in. Before you book
The best one, in our view. The Skradin entrance is about 20 minutes away and the Lozovac entrance is a similar drive, so you can arrive at opening, walk the boardwalks before the crowds, and be back for a swim at Banj beach by early afternoon. In summer, earlier is always better.
Low, on the waterfront side. The harbour lots along the riva and the underground garage at Poljana are the practical options; the old town above them is stone stairways, so there is nothing to drive up to. From June to September the lots are paid and fill from mid-morning.
Yes, by excursion boat rather than by car; there are no vehicle ferries into the park. Boats leave from Vodice and Murter in the morning, both an easy drive from Sibenik, and having your own car means you make the early check-in without depending on a transfer.
Either works. Split Airport and Zadar Airport are both roughly 45 to 50 minutes away by car, so pick whichever has the better fare or arrival time. Most suppliers hand over at both airports, and the exact meeting point shows on the listing before you book.
Yes. Sibenik sits between Split and Zadar airports, so a one-way rental that starts at one and ends at the other suits a Dalmatian loop well. There is a fixed one-way fee for the route, shown up front before you pay, with no booking fees on top of it.
If you are driving between 15 November and 15 April, winter equipment is required by law on the designated sections you may cross on the way to the park. Local suppliers fit their cars for the season, so a car booked for those months comes ready and you do not need to arrange anything separately.
