Croatia's home market drives manual, so automatics are the minority of every fleet here, and that single fact explains all the horror stories. Renters who assume an automatic will simply be waiting somewhere discover in August that the few available ones went weeks ago, or that the desk's idea of an upgrade is a manual with an apology. The fix is boring and effective: book the specific car early and confirm the gearbox on the listing, not at the counter.
That is the entire reason this page exists. Every listing we compare prints its transmission, and the car cards below show it too, so what you reserve is what has two pedals. The pools are deepest where the fleets are biggest: there are automatic rentals in the capital all year because the business fleet skews that way, and automatics waiting at Split Airport through the season, with Dubrovnik close behind.
Do you actually need one? If you drive an automatic at home, yes, and do not let anyone talk you into relearning clutch control on holiday. Croatia is a hill-start country: old-town lanes pitch sharply off the harbours, garage ramps are tight, and the viewpoints people pull over for sit on gradients. None of it is difficult with the gearbox you already know.
Book earlier than you would for a manual; four to six weeks ahead is comfortable outside July and August, and more is better inside them. Filter or check the transmission line on each listing, then stop worrying, because the gearbox is part of the reservation with the local suppliers we compare, not a request scribbled in a notes field. If an automatic matters to you, it is also worth a glance at the insurance options in plain words while you book; newer automatics tend to sit in higher car classes, and excess amounts scale with the car.
Expect modern torque-converter and DSG-style cars concentrated in the compact-and-up classes: think Golf, Octavia, 2008 and the seven-seaters, plus nearly every premium car. The cheapest city hatchbacks are where manuals persist, so an automatic usually costs a class step more, not a punitive surcharge. Before you book
Usually one car class more, not double. Automatics cluster in the newer compact, SUV and people-carrier classes, so you pay those classes' rates; the dirt-cheap end of the market stays manual. The listing price is the real price either way, with the gearbox printed on it.
With the local suppliers we compare, yes; the transmission is part of the specific car you reserve, not a preference. This is exactly the thing the big-counter model gets wrong with its or-similar fleet notes. Confirm the word automatic on the listing and keep the confirmation.
For July and August, as soon as your dates are firm; the automatic pool is the first part of every Croatian fleet to sell through. Four to six weeks ahead is normally fine for June and September, and outside the season you can be spontaneous.
If you drive one at home, emphatically. The driving here is easy but vertical: hill starts above harbours, tight garage ramps, queues on gradients in old towns. An automatic removes the one part of that picture that punishes rusty clutch work, and the motorway does not care either way.
