Car rental terms and conditions

These are the conditions that apply to every car booked through this site. Anything set per car, the price, the deposit, the cover level and the drop fee, is shown on that car's listing before you pay.

The terms in full

  1. The minimum chargeable rental period is 24 hours. If you rent a car for a few hours, you are charged for a full day.
  2. If you want to extend your rental period, you must tell the rental agent in advance.
  3. You must return the car with the same level of fuel you picked it up with. If the level is lower you pay the difference at the rental company's rates; if it is higher you are not compensated.
  4. If the car is returned so dirty that it hinders inspection, it is washed at the customer's expense.
  5. Standard insurance does not cover damage to the wheels, undercarriage, windscreen or interior.
  6. In the event of an insured incident you must notify the rental agent immediately and obtain a police report, unless otherwise agreed with the agent. Not doing so cancels the insurance on the car and leaves you fully responsible.
  7. The insurance is invalid where damage is deliberate, whether through vandalism or neglect.
  8. Rental cars may be driven on paved public roads only.
  9. Permission to take the car outside the country is selected when you book. Prices and conditions vary with the length of the trip, the car and the rental company's policy.
  10. Travelling by ferry between the islands and the mainland is arranged as part of the booking, so choose it as you book rather than at the quay.
  11. The contact phone number you give at booking, with the correct country code, must be reachable throughout the rental and on the day before pick-up.
  12. Fuel, parking, fines and road tolls are the renter's responsibility.
  13. The minimum driver age and driving experience are listed on each car's page and vary even between similar models. The rental agent may decline the booking if the driver does not meet that car's requirements.
  14. You need a valid national driving licence with its details in Latin script, valid to at least the end of the rental. Copies and electronic licences are not accepted. If your licence is only valid in its country of issue, carry an International Driving Permit alongside it and present it on request.
  15. How the balance is paid, how the deposit is held and when it is returned are shown during booking and on your rental voucher.
  16. A physical embossed credit card in the main driver's name may be required. Some companies accept a debit card, which is stated during booking and on the voucher; it must also be physical, personalised and embossed, in the main driver's name.
  17. Some companies hold the deposit for 30 to 45 days after the car is returned. If a fine or an unpaid toll from your rental period reaches the company, that amount, plus administrative costs on fines, is charged to the deposit.
  18. Only small pets may travel in rental cars, and must stay in a travel carrier throughout.
